I have a small digital camera that can take videos. Every time I take a video clip, it shakes however still I try to be and always have to mount it on furniture or a tripod to hold it still.
But my main question is that I want to move the video clip around in all directions professionally (eg. in documentaries, where video clips panning around buildings are always perfectly smooth). A tripod cannot move smoothly, therefore does anyone know a way to move the camera in straight directions smoothly without shaking?

You can learn ways to hold the camera that reduce shaking:http://www.digital-photo-secrets.com/tip…
You can get a camera with image stabilization that works in video mode:http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/S5…
If you want to get more elaborate, which it sounds like you want to do for making documentaries, you can build a homemade steadycam:http://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+bu…
or buy a steadycam:http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll…
If you need better stabilization, you can build a camera dolly:http://www.google.com/search?&q=how+to+b…
(note- the bigger the wheels, the steadier it is)
or buy a camera dolly. The best camera dollies, as used by professionals in the movies, run on tracks instead of free moving wheels. A dolly on tracks or a camera crane are pretty much the only ways to get perfectly steady shots with a moving camera.
A tripod is actually a good option. However, you need one with a video head, which prevents shake and allows smooth panning.
But, there is no way you could ever expect to achieve ‘professional’ results when using the movie recording function on your small digital camera. For a far superior video quality, you really need a dedicated video camera.
How many documentarians do you think actually used the movie mode on their small digital camera? None, I would think…
